Celebrating 15 years: Happy Workversary, Joyce!

Published Thursday, November 14, 2024

Joyce joined us as a temporary cataloger in Technical Services, but clearly, the library magic got to her because she decided to stay for good—and thank goodness she did! Over the years, Joyce has worn almost every hat this library has to offer, from cataloging to circulation and the last several years she has been back in Tech Services as our go-to Barcoder and Processor. Joyce doesn’t just get the job done; she’s all about the details that keep our library humming like a well-oiled (and beautifully organized) machine.
With shelves of materials waiting, you'd think Joyce would be fully booked. But she still brings her signature warmth and dedication to everything she does. And let’s talk about her amazing book-recommending superpowers: if cozy mysteries are your jam, Joyce is the person to talk to! Beyond her professional talents, Joyce has a heart as big as her reading list. She has an uncanny ability to remember what several of us love to read and often surprises us with bookish treasures from her thrift finds. Plus, when she’s not working, she’s volunteering for our Library Friends group.
Joyce, you are a one-of-a-kind gem, and we’re beyond grateful to have you as part of our library family. Thank you for everything you do for us, our patrons, and our community.

- Gwen, Head of Technical Services

In what part of the library do you work and what do you do?

I currently work in Technical Services as a barcoder/processor. I have previously worked as a cataloger and as a circulation clerk.

What has changed the most since you started working here?

The number of services and databases available online continues to increase to meet the changing needs of our patrons. (We remain committed to traditional formats and services – also to meet the needs of our patrons.)

What services offered at the library do you wish more people knew about?

Not a particular service - just that I would like our patrons to remember that helping patrons and patron needs is our top priority. Please let us know how we can help meet your needs.

What has kept you working at the library?

This is an easy question! The people that I see and work with every day, staff and patrons, make each day a little different. (And watching the babies with the bubbles in story time always makes me smile).

Do you have a book character role model?

At different times in my life I would have chosen different role models. For example, Nancy Drew with her willingness to go outside the expectations of her time for female teens would have been an early choice. Overall though, one choice would be Maisie Dobbs (author – Jacqueline Winspear) for her willingness to work hard to take advantage of every opportunity she was given to succeed as well as her dedication to helping others from her World War I service as a nurse in France to her work as a private investigator.

What is the first book you remember reading?

I don't remember the first book but I do remember being told not to read ahead in my reader - maybe in 2nd grade. Instead I was given school library books – yea!

Do you have a favorite book genre?
Historical mystery followed by almost any type of mystery except those with very descriptive murders. Authors Peter Tremayne, Josephine Tey, Elizabeth George all are favorites and reflect different aspects of the genre.
