NoveList Recommendations Part 3: British Mysteries

Published Monday, July 22, 2019

NoveList can assist you with a search to find the next great series, or by recommending a “read-alike” title that's thematically similar to your favorite books. So, before you lug home a big stack of “maybes,” or fill up the memory on your device with “please be my next favorites,” we suggest spending a minute or two on Novelist to better the odds that you will enjoy what you choose.

My favorite crime/mysteries have British settings and usually, by default, British authors. My two favorite sub-genres are psychological suspense and police procedural. I tested Novelist with my own favorites to see what would happen.

In my first search, I wanted to find similar series books to those of Ann Cleeves, who writes the Vera Stanhope crime series (made into the popular British TV show, Vera). For this search, I chose one of my favorite titles in the series with these results:

The Crow Trap by Ann Cleeves

Then I clicked on Author Read-alikes at the bottom and was not disappointed. The results list below highlight the reason why these authors were chosen. When I looked through the results list, I found one that I am hopeful about want to read.

Next, I searched renowned British author Ruth Rendell, who died in 2015, leaving a legacy of fantastic psychological suspense. From her results list, I chose one of my favorites of hers, The Vault. You can see that it gives the blurb, more related information below, and cover images of more Title Read-alikes. You can see these book covers down the right-hand side of the results page.

There is so much more information you can find, depending on how much time you’d like to spend. Enjoy!
