Why I Am Still Working at 80: An Interview with Lorraine

Published Thursday, May 16, 2019
How long have you worked at the Edwardsville Public Library?

I have worked at the library for over 20 years. I don't need to work. I do it because the library is a special place to be.

What has kept you working so long?

I am 80 years old and I am asked all the time why I am still working. I am someone who likes to keep busy. I need to get up in the morning and have some purpose to my day. I would not be happy being home all the time.

What aspects of your job do you particularly enjoy?

The people I work with are my friends and like a second family. It makes me feel good to be among people who care about me. I have become friends with patrons also. I take great satisfaction in keeping the library in order.

How would you define your impact at the Edwardsville Public Library?

After all these years I want people to see me as just another library worker. I work hard and do not want special attention because I am 80 years old. I will have to retire one of these days, but for now, I am happy to be here.
