Welcome to the World of Dark Romance

Published Thursday, August 14, 2025

Dark Romance. If you are on BookTok, you have certainly heard of the genre, as it continues to grow in popularity. If you have not heard of the genre, allow me to shed some light on Dark Romance.

Dark Romance is a subgenre of romance that focuses on more dark, taboo themes. Books in the genre contain morally gray characters, violence, trauma, and explore disturbing aspects of romance that are not often found in mainstream romance. However dark they may get, and even if it takes multiple books, Dark Romance stories aim for an ending that leaves the main characters feeling happy and fulfilled, even if it is not a conventional "happy ending." Most books contain content that may disturb some readers, so please be sure to read any trigger warnings at the beginning of any book.

Here at EPL, we have always had a few Dark Romance books on our shelves. I am happy to announce we are adding more to our collection, and will have a section dedicated to the genre! Whether you are a Dark Romance bibliophile, a complete beginner, someone who prefers more "lite" Dark Romance, or even an enjoyer of non-human love interests, we have a nice array of books for you to check out, literally! Here are a few of my recommendations.

Butcher
Butcher & Blackbird
by Brynne Weaver (CONTENT WARNINGS)

When a chance encounter sparks an unlikely bond between rival murderers Sloane and Rowan, the two find something elusive—the friendship of a like-minded, pitch-black soul. From small-town West Virginia to upscale California, from downtown Boston to rural Texas, the two hunters collide in an annual game of blood and suffering, one that pits them against the most dangerous monsters in the country. But as their friendship develops into something more, the restless ghosts left in their wake are only a few steps behind, ready to claim more than just their newfound love. Can Rowan and Sloane dig themselves out of a game of graves? Or have they finally met their match?

This is the first book of the Ruinous Love Trilogy, and is perfect for anyone who enjoys the following tropes: friends-to-lovers, friendly rivalry, touch her/him and die, and he falls first.

Her soul
Her Soul to Take
by Harley Laroux (CONTENT WARNING)

Leon: I earned my reputation among magicians for a reason: one wrong move and you're dead. Killer, they called me, and killing is what I'm best at. Except her. The one I was supposed to take, the one I should have killed - I didn't. The cult that once controlled me wants her, and I'm not about to lose my new toy to them.

Rae: I've always believed in the supernatural. Hunting for ghosts is my passion, but summoning a demon was never part of the plan. Monsters are roaming the woods, and something ancient - something evil - is waking up and calling my name. I don't know who I can trust, or how deep this darkness goes. All I know is my one shot at survival is the demon stalking me, and he doesn't just want my body - he wants my soul.

This is the first book of the Souls Trilogy, and takes place in an old town with a dark forest and even darker history. This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys the following tropes: paranormal romance, enemies-to-lovers, touch her and die, jerk with a heart of gold, and non-human love interest.

The Manipulator : I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow :
I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go. Not even when she begs me to.

This is the first book of the Cat and Mouse duology, and is perfect for anyone who enjoys the following tropes: stalker romance, touch her and die, he falls first, villain to lovers, and fierce female main character.

Punk
Punk 57
by Penelope Douglas (CONTENT WARNING)

Misha : In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. The other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. In no time at all, we were arguing about everything. For the next seven years, it was us. Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am. We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it? Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances? I need to meet her. I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen :
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch. Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should've gotten his number or picture or something. He could be gone forever. Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

Punk 57 is a standalone book, and is a more lite dark romance, in comparison to others. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys the following tropes: pen pals, bully romance, friends-to-enemies-to-lovers, hidden identity, and angst.
