Patron Code of Conduct

Edwardsville Public Library

These rules are posted for the comfort and protection of library visitors and staff. These rules will be courteously but firmly enforced. We ask your cooperation in maintaining a welcoming environment conducive to the activities normally associated with the use of a public library.

  1. The consumption or possession of alcohol or illegal drugs in the Library is prohibited. Persons exhibiting signs of intoxication or substance abuse will be asked to leave.
  2. Behavior or language must not obstruct or harass patrons, volunteers, or staff or interfere with their use of the Library.
  3. Patrons are required to dress appropriately and shoes and shirt are to be worn at all times.
  4. Adults loitering in the youth library without children will be asked to leave.
  5. Children seven years and younger must be accompanied by an adult or caregiver at all times. The Library recommends caregivers accompany children at all times.
  6. Personal belongings must be attended at all times. The Library takes no responsibility for items left unattended.
  7. Drinks with lids and dry snacks are allowed in the reading areas. Only covered drinks are allowed in the computer labs. All other food is only allowed in Carnegie’s.
  8. Smoking and vaping are prohibited inside or within 15 feet of exterior doors, and the use of matches and lighters is not permitted in the Library.
  9. Health or hygiene matters may be addressed if they interfere with staff or patron use and/or enjoyment of the Library.
  10. Bathing, shaving, laundering, and improper use of restrooms is not allowed.
  11. Furnishings, materials, and equipment should be used for their intended function and in a manner that does not cause damage or disturb staff or other visitors.
  12. Conversations, in-person or via phone, must not disturb others.
